RECAP: Women’s Soccer Claims First Win of the Season Against Purchase

Carina Cooke with the lone goal

The Bard College Women's Soccer Team secured their first victory of the season with a 1-0 win over Purchase, thanks to a decisive penalty goal from sophomore Carina Cooke on Tuesday evening at the Purchase Soccer Field.

The Raptors set the tone early, creating several opportunities in the opening minutes. Carina Cooke and Mahlia Slaiby both tested the Panthers' defense with quick strikes on goal within the first seven minutes. Bard maintained relentless pressure throughout the first half, racking up nine shots and five corner kicks. Their efforts paid off when Cooke converted a crucial penalty kick, giving Bard the lead heading into halftime.

The second half saw Bard continue their aggressive play. Within the first two minutes, Senowa Leverentz fired off another shot, as the Raptors sought to extend their advantage. Despite 11 more attempts on goal, Bard couldn't break through again, but their defense held firm. The Raptors' backline neutralized SUNY Purchase's offense, preserving the 1-0 lead and delivering Bard their first win of the season.

The Raptors finished the day with an impressive 20 shots, as seven of the 11 starters recorded two or more attempts. Carina Cooke, Mahlia Slaiby, Isabella Vinces, Waleska Brito, Goldie Siff, Georgia McCauley, and Senowa Leverentz all contributed to the offensive barrage. Goalkeeper Seymone Rosenberg had three saves and claimed the shutout win.

The Raptors will be back again on September 14th to face off against Sarah Lawrence for a 3:00 pm kickoff.
