RECAP: Risse has record setting day as baseball defeats Vassar

Risse breaks all-time career wins; Hannan ranks second in career home runs

ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. – The Bard College baseball team concluded their home slate with a split against conference foe Vassar on Saturday afternoon. The Raptors won Game 1 by a score of 21-3 before falling in Game 2, 9-2, at Honey Field.

Aidan Risse threw a complete game in Game 1 and overtook Alex Bunell's all-time career win record of 11. The Raptors' bats were swinging in Game 1 as they scored 21 runs on 20 hits. It is the third time in school history that the Raptors have scored 21 runs or more in a single game; the previous times occurring against Rutgers-Newark in 2022 and St. Lawrence in 2016.

In Game 1, every starter had at least one hit, and eight of the starters had multiple RBI. Sam Dumper, Michael Kurlan, Kam Naficy, and Xavier Webb each had three hits, with Naficy leading the team with a career-high four RBI. Risse threw 7.0 innings with eight strikeouts and only allowed five hits.

The Raptors set the tone in the bottom of the first by scoring seven runs as every batter in the lineup had an opportunity at the plate. Mike Hannan added to the team's success by hitting his eighth career home run in the bottom of the second, placing him second in the school record books for career home runs.  In the bottom of the third, the Raptors continued their dominance, going through the lineup again and scoring eight runs on five hits. The Raptors finished off the scoring in the bottom of the fifth with five more runs, cycling through the entire lineup for the third time. Vassar scored three runs in the top of the sixth to prevent a shutout.

In Game 2, Vassar used a late rally to take the win, 9-2. Mike Lynch and Jimmy Famularo were the only two Raptors with multiple hits in the outing, while Gonzalez and Spencer Azzara added one hit each. Bard and Vassar were scoreless in the first two frames and it wasn't until the third inning that each team scored a run. Bard took the lead in the next inning with an RBI single up the middle by Lynch.

Vassar rallied back with a two-run home run in the top of the sixth to take a 3-2 lead. The Brewers then scored another two runs in the seventh and secured the win with four more in the eighth. Kane Morgan started on the mound for the Raptors, throwing 5.2 innings with four strikeouts before Luke Langford and Graham Benway each came out of the bullpen in relief. Langford threw 1.1 innings with two strikeouts and Benway threw 2.0 innings with one strikeout.

Bard will close out their season and the conference series at Vassar tomorrow at 1 p.m.
