The Bard College baseball team took down USMMA in a wire-to-wire victory on Tuesday evening at Bartoszek Field.
Bard started strong, kicking off the top of the first inning with a double from
Sam Dumper followed by an RBI single by
Kam Naficy and a 2-run single by
Jimmy Famularo to take a 3-0 lead. USMMA put a run on the board in the bottom of the second with an RBI triple, but a two-out solo home run by
Gavin Gonzalez in the top of the third increased the Raptors' lead to 4-1. Gonzalez scored two runs, went 1-for-2, and was hit by two pitches in today's game.
Merchant Marine tied the game in the bottom of the third, 4-4. First-year pitchers
Nikhil Newman and
Evan Landsman both came on in relief after starter
Bryant Elliott threw 2.0 innings with a strikeout, allowing just one hit. Newman came out of the bullpen in the third inning and threw 2.0 innings with one strikeout. Landsman came on in the fifth inning and tied his career-high of five strikeouts. He allowed just one hit and one earned run with no walks.
In the top of the sixth, the Raptors struck again, scoring two runs from an RBI single by Famularo and an RBI single from
Spencer Azzara. Famularo and
Michael Kurlan led the team with two hits each, and Famularo brought home a team-best three RBI.
The Raptors snapped Merchant Marine's 14-game winning streak while putting an end to their own 17-game losing streak.
Bard will host Union on Friday at 3 p.m. as they celebrate their four seniors and kick off their conference series against the Garnet Chargers.
