Raptors Fight Hard in Conference Match

The Bard College women's volleyball team (4-15, 0-3 Liberty League) dropped a Liberty League match against the William Smith Herons (14-2, 4-0 Liberty League).

In the first set, the Raptors were able to get to double digits, highlighted by Carmen Merrick's kill off of a Heron's dig attempt. LaeAnna Riley scored a kill in the set, while Becca Wintjen had her 25th ace of the season. William Smith's Malya Sayre had five kills, an ace, and three digs in the set.

The Raptors jumped out to a 9-1 lead in the second, using tactical serve placement. Merrick hit two serves to the back right corner of the court for aces after Coral Cook scored an ace off of a deep serve. Ella Small and Paola De La Cruz each added another ace later in the set. The Herons came into the match allowing the second fewest aces per set, at 1.64, but in this set, the Raptors found holes to the tune of five aces. The Herons came back from a ten-point deficit at 14-4, taking the second set 25-20. Marin Montagne and Arielle Newsome led the Herons on the 21-6 run, hitting four kills each.

Bard hit .087 in the second compared to William Smith's .167, as the Herons had five times as many errors as they did in the first set.

The Herons took the first 13 points of the third and final set before making an error. Small hustled to get to the Herons' attacks, digging many of them and settling down the Raptors. Wintjen had five assists in the third, setting up Riley and Xenia Vassou for two kills each. Riley didn't commit any attacking errors in the final frame.

Bard had seven aces, matching William Smith, and 32 digs to the Herons' 43. Eight Raptors recorded digs, led by Small with nine. De La Cruz had her first two aces of the season, tying for the team lead with Merrick, who had her first ace in 12 matches. Wintjen had nine assists and seven digs.

The Raptors will look to rebound against Union at home on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
