Bard College senior
Alex Luscher has been named to the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-District First Team, it was announced Thursday.
The Academic All-District Teams recognize the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances on the field and in the classroom. First Team All-District honorees advance to the CoSIDA Academic All-America ballot. First-, second- and third-team Academic All-America selections will be announced in June.
"Alex had a tremendous season," Bard coach
Andy Salvatore said. "Both on and off the field he surpassed all of our expectations. What he has been able to do in the classroom, not just this year but over the course of his entire time at Bard, is remarkable.
"He is undoubtedly going to be extremely successful," Salvatore added.
Luscher has carried a 4.0 grade point average since his first semester at Bard, and he just completed his finest season on the baseball field. Moved into the leadoff role, he hit .317 with a team-best 28 runs scored, and he stole a school record 21 bases (on 26 attempts.) He made several dazzling plays in the field at second base, finishing with 50 assists, and he was part of seven double plays. In conference play, he was Top 10 in at-bats, hits, walks, runs, and he led the Liberty League with 16 stolen bases.
Earlier this week, and for the second year in a row, Luscher was named one of Bard's Scholar-Athletes of the Year at the annual Athletics Award Banquet.
