ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. - The Bard College baseball team split a non-conference doubleheader with the College of Mount St. Vincent on Saturday, losing Game 1, 12-7, and winning the nightcap, 4-3.
Mount St. Vincent's 17 hits were the story of Game 1, and Bard starter
Evan Matthews was the story in Game 2. Matthews gave up just one hit over five innings and struck out 7.
Murphy Foss picked up the save with two innings of relief.
"
Evan Matthews was in control," Bard coach
Andy Salvatore said. "He was ahead of the hitters in good counts, and he attacked the zone."
Justin Fiume went 3-for-6 with a walk on the day,
Jared Toby doubled in the first game and homered in the second game, and
Jordan Myers went 3-for-7 with two RBI.
Alex Luscher and
Frank Rybicki produced clutch run-scoring singles late in the second game. Salvatore was quick to point out a key defensive play by
Andrew Roberge on an infield pop-up during the tense seventh inning.
"We played much better defensively in the second game," Salvatore said. "With Evan pitching well, and the defense playing well, we got a big bomb from
Jared Toby and a couple of key knocks from
Alex Luscher and
Frank Rybicki and we were good to go."
Bard's first home weekend of 2022 continues on Sunday with a single game against Mount St. Mary College at 1.
