Men's swimming team opens season at Vassar

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - The Bard College men's swimming team opened the 2021-22 season with a dual meet at Vassar on Wednesday night.

Vassar prevailed, 96-46. Click here to see the complete results.

"After 20 months without competition, it was great to be back in a meet and we appreciate Vassar hosting us," Bard coach John Weitz said. "We look at this meet as a scrimage; just a chance to see where we are and what kind of racers the team has. Over half of our teams have never competed in college. This was their chance to see that racing in college is the same as racing for their club or high school team."

Freddy Coronel provided one of the highlights for Bard with a victory in the 100-meter butterfly.

"This year's squad may be smaller than many of the teams we will swim this year," Weitz said, "but there are some potentially strong swimmers on the team. Freddy's swim in the 100-fly was impressive Coming off a short turnaround from swimming the 200-IM, he swam a great race to finish first in a tight race. Taking his first 50 out under control, he really picked up the second 50 to pull away from the field."

Bard will next compete at St. Lawrence University on Nov. 6.
