ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. - On the first night of back-to-back matches, the Bard College men's volleyball team dropped a three set affair to Wilkes University in non-conference action Tuesday evening.
The Raptors (1-12, 0-2 UVC) jumped out to an early 4-1 lead in the first, capped off by one of junior
Joshua Han's two kills in the set. Wilkes (9-7) responded with a fury, winning 11 of the next 14 points to take the lead, with Zach Evans (Nescopeck, Pa.) and Everett Fritz (Ringtown, Pa.) leading the way with three kills apiece in the first. Bard was able to close the gap late, with freshman
Angel Obergh picking up two kills and five assists, but the Colonels were ultimately able to hold off the late rally and come away with a 25-20 victory.
The Raptors were unable to ever get going in the second, as Wilkes rolled to a 8-1 lead and cruised from there. Andrew Potter (Nazareth, Pa.) earned four kills in the middle set, while Evans picked up another three. Although Han picked up two more kills in the second, Bard was never able to get back in it as the Colonels took set two by a score of 25-9.
Despite a strong effort, the Raptors were unable to claim the third set as Wilkes took a 25-19 decision. The teams battled back and forth throughout to set, but the Colonels were able to build a 21-14 lead. Bard then went on to win five consecutive points to cut the lead to two, but Wilkes came back to win the next four points to close out the match.
Han led the Raptors on the night with six kills and nine digs, while freshmen
Sebastien Dufour and
Quincy Ross picked up three apiece. Obergh picked up a team-high 13 assists, and junior
Colin Schroeder had seven digs during the match.
The Raptors are right back at it Wednesday, Feb. 26, as Bard hosts fourth-ranked SUNY New Paltz at 7:00 p.m.
