Raptors drop UVC opener to Elmira

ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. - Playing in their first conference matchup of the 2020 season, the Bard College men's volleyball team fell to Elmira College 3-0 Sunday in United Volleyball Conference (UVC) action at the Stevenson Athletic Center.

The Raptors (1-10, 0-1 UVC) were unable to get going offensively, as the Soaring Eagles (5-9, 1-1 UVC) jumped out to an 11-1 lead thanks to four first set kills from Matt Straney (Clifton Park, N.Y.) Despite two kills in the first from junior Joshua Han, Bard couldn't close the gap and fell 25-11 in the opening set.

The second set featured a similar pattern, as Elmira took a 9-1 advantage and rode that momentum to a 25-10 win. Declan Quinn (Drexel Hill, Pa.) picked up four kills in the set for the visitors, while Landon Miller (Chambersburg, Pa.) had three kills in the middle frame. The Raptors received three assists from freshman Angel Obergh, but the Soaring Eagles again proved to be too much. Elmira then closed things out in the third with another impressive victory, coming away with a 25-14 victory in the set and earning their first conference win of the season.

Obergh led Bard on the day with four kills, four assists and an .800 hitting percentage, while Han picked up three kills and three digs. Junior Colin Schroeder led the team defensively with five digs during the match.

The Raptors continue UVC play Wednesday, Feb. 19, when they host New York University in a 7:00 p.m. matchup.
