ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. - Corner kicks don't really count for anything from a statistical standpoint, but if they lead to goals, they count.
The Ithaca College women's soccer team produced 11 corners in the first half against Bard on Saturday, and the Raptors kept them from scoring off of any of them. But the Bombers did manage to score once in the first half, and once in the second half to take down the Raptors, 2-0, in a Liberty League game.
Several of Ithaca's first half corners came in succession, as numerous kicks to near post were just deposited behind the goal line by Bard defenders. But it was a free kick in the 19th minute that led to a goal. The free kick into the box was headed off the crossbar by Megan O'Reilly (Syracuse, NY), and the rebound took one hop before Kelsey Espenhorst (Hamilton, NJ) headed it into the low right corner for a 1-0 lead. Another good opportunity a bit later was cleared off the line by
Abby Frazier.
Bard's best opportunity to equalize came in the 34th minute, when a through ball from
Alina Augustin found freshman
Gillian Randall. She was forced wide by a defender, goalie Sara Jakobsze (Webster, NY) came off her line, Randall had her beat but the shot went just wide of the near post.
Ithaca held an 11-2 edge in shots at halftime.
The Raptors just couldn't get any offense going in the second half, and Ithaca doubled its lead in the 88th minute. Ally Christman (Clarks Summit, PA) struck Ithaca's only corner kick of the second half right to the top of the box, and Christina DiCesare (Easton, CT) deposited a header just over the fingers of Bard goalie
Abigail Stanley and just under the crossbar for a 2-0 lead.
Ithaca is 6-2-1 overall and 1-0-0 in Liberty League play. Bard is 3-6-1, 0-2-0. Stanley made seven saves.
