Raptors open season with 6-0 victory over Elmira

ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. - The Bard College women's soccer team enjoyed a flying start to the 2019 season, scoring five first-half goals en route to a 6-0 win over Elmira College on Saturday.

The Raptors dominated from the start, creating immediate pressure everywhere the ball went, and it resulted in an early goal by senior Julia Gibson. Mikaela Martiros found Gibson unmarked at the right corner of the box, and even as a pair of defenders closed in, Gibson had time to settle the ball, and she blasted a shot that beat Elmira's freshman keeper, Ally Knorr-Anderson (Colchester, CT), to the far post.

A little more than five minutes later, senior Giuliana Scanni intercepted a lazy pass at midfield and burst in alone, beating Knorr-Anderson to make it 2-0 in the 12th minute.

Scanni scored again, this time shooting high from just outside the box, to make it 3-0 in the 24th minute off an assist from Alina Augustin. And Augustin got into the act in the 32nd minute, knocking in a cross from Giordana Scanni off her knee to make it 4-0. Giordana Scanni assisted on the first collegiate goal for Claire Dickson in the 40th minute, and it was 5-0 at halftime.

Bard substituted liberally in the second half, with Martiros providing the only offense for either team, scoring off her own rebound after being sent in alone on a great pass from Kylie Quinn.

Abigail Stanley started in goal for Bard, but didn't face a shot. Skylar Farmer made two saves in the second half.

The Raptors hit the road next, playing at Smith College on Sunday. Follow it live right here.
