ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. - The Bard College baseball team split a Liberty League doubleheader with Vassar on Sunday, walking off with a three-run ninth inning in Game 1, 7-6, then losing 14-3 in Game 2.
Vassar was up 4-0 entering the top of the fifth of Game 1, which was scheduled for seven innings. Bard loaded the bases in the bottom of the fifth, and with one out, got back-to-back infield singles from
Jordan Myers and
Rory Maglich to cut the deficit to 4-2.
An RBI single by
Spencer Checkoway in the bottom of the sixth made it 4-3, and with two outs,
Gunnar Schichtl singled to score Checkoway and tie the game at 4-4 heading into the seventh. Nobody scored in the seventh, so the game went to extra innings.
In the top of the ninth, Vassar got a run-scoring double from Bryan Rubin (Bryn Mawr, PA), followed by an RBI triple from Matt Schwartz (Dix Hills, NY), and it was 6-4 going into the bottom of the ninth.
Schichtl singled, went to second on a passed ball and scored on one-out single by
Jordan Myers, making it 6-5 in the bottom of the ninth. Later in the inning with two outs and runners on second and third,
Chris Blake grounded to third, but the third basemen threw it away, tying up the game, 6-6.
Justin Fiume then won it with an opposite field single.
Alex Bunnell (3-0) got the win in relief. Schichtl went 3-for-3, Myers drove in a pair of runs and Checkoway finished with two hits and two runs scored.
Vassar banged out 17 hits, including four doubles and a homer in winning Game 2, 14-3.
Angelo Winings had two hits, while
Robert Arciola and
Dillon Daine drove in a run apiece. The Brewers are 7-7 overall, 3-1 in Liberty League play.
Bard (7-7, 1-3) will next host a non-league doubleheader against Mount St. Vincent on Tuesday at 1:30. Follow it live right here.
