Men's basketball falls in overtime in season opener against Becker

ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. - The Bard College men's basketball team kicked off their 2019-20 season Friday evening in a matchup with Becker College, falling in overtime by a 72-67 score.

The teams played evenly early in the first half, battling to a 17-17 tie with eight minutes to go. But early foul trouble for the Raptors allowed the Hawks to jump out in front, and the visitors were able to stretch the lead to nine heading into halftime.

Bard was able to rebound early in the second half, as freshman Elliot Harris and sophomore Stamatis Koulouris hit back-to-back three pointers to get the Raptors within three. Following a Becker three pointer, Koulouris converted an and-one, followed by another three for Harris to get Bard right back in the game. The Hawks eventually stretched their lead back up to five, but Koulouris hit another three followed by a layup for Harris to help the Raptors draw even at 50 with just over four minutes remaining.

Becker took a late lead following a layup by Terrance Edwards with 1:21 remaining, but the freshman Harris made a clutch three-pointer with 19 seconds remaining to give the Raptors a one point lead. However, the Hawks were able to tie the game at 53 with three seconds left, as Mateus Ribeiro made one-of-two free throws following a Bard foul, sending the game to overtime.

The teams traded baskets early in the overtime period, but Becker then went on an 8-1 run to take a 65-58 lead with two minutes remaining. The Raptors eventually cut the lead to five, but ran out of time as the Hawks picked up a 72-67 victory.

On the night, Harris led Bard with 21 points, five rebounds and three steals, and freshman Kevin Le chipped in 11 points and six rebounds. Freshman Stefanos Psarras picked up his first career double-double, scoring 10 points and grabbing 12 rebounds, and Koulouris had nine points and seven rebounds in 21 minutes of action.

The Raptors return to the court Friday, Nov. 15, when they travel to Dartmouth, Mass. to take on Trinity College (Conn.) in the first round of the Lafrance Hospitality Tournament. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:00 p.m.
