ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. - Coming off a win at SUNY Delhi, the Bard College women's volleyball team continued their strong play with two victories over Sarah Lawrence College and Maritime College Saturday afternoon.
The Raptors (6-10, 0-2 LL) got off to a hot start against Sarah Lawrence (9-9), winning nine of the first 11 points to take an early lead. Following a push by the Gryphons, Bard closed the set out on a 13-3 run to earn a 25-12 win in set one.
The teams played a much tighter second set that included eight lead changes, but following a late 4-0 run by Sarah Lawrence to get within a point, the Raptors took two of the following three points to come away with a 25-23 set two victory.
The Gryphons started out strong in the third, taking six of the first seven points. Bard responded with an 8-0 run, followed later by a 7-0 run to take the set by a 25-21 score and pick up a 3-0 victory.
Junior
Mikala L'Hote led the Raptors with 11 kills while also picking up six digs, and freshman
Macey Spearko had eight kills and five digs on the match. Senior
Maracela Talamantes ended with three kills and seven digs, while classmate
Lia Taus picked up four service aces and seven digs. Senior
Jewel Smith had 30 assists and 10 digs, and senior
Emily Anastasi led the Raptors with 24 digs.
Following the win against Sarah Lawrence, the Raptors faced off with Maritime College (3-15) in their second match of the afternoon. Bard earned a wire-to-wire win in set one, never once trailing and picking up a 25-18 win.
The Raptors struggled early in set two, falling behind 9-1 to the Privateers. But following the early defecit, Bard went on a 12-3 run to take the lead and never looked back. They closed out the set by winning eight of the last 10 points, coming away victorious in set two by a score of 25-19.
The teams traded points early in the third, as the teams played to a 10-10 score. The Raptors then closed out the match on a strong note, going on a 15-6 run to earn a 25-16 win in set three and winning their second straight-set match of the day.
Junior
Stella Gatti led Bard with 10 kills during the match, while L'Hote picked up eight. Spearko had a strong game with six kills and 10 digs, and sophomore
Morenike Fabiyi had six kills as well. Smith had 33 assists to go along with five kills and seven digs, and Talamantes ended the match with five kills and eight digs. Taus picked up five service aces in addition to four digs, and Anastasi had 19 digs during the match.
The Raptors return to action Tuesday, Oct. 8, when they are on the road to take on SUNY Cobleskill in a 7:00 p.m. matchup.
