Women's volleyball picks up five-set win at Delhi

DELHI, N.Y. - The Bard College women's volleyball team picked up a hard fought 3-2 win Thursday night, coming away victorious in a back-and-forth five-set matchup with SUNY Delhi.

Although tied late in the first set, the Raptors (4-10, 0-2 LL) fell by a 25-22 score as the Broncos (7-6) took a 1-0 lead. Bard responded in the second set, building an 11-6 lead then closing out the set on a 7-3 run to pick up a 25-18 win and even the match at one set apiece.

Delhi regained control of the match in the third set, getting out to an 11-4 lead and never looking back. The Broncos earned a 25-14 win in the third, going ahead 2-1 and putting themselves in a position to pick up the victory.

But the Raptors once again were able to answer, winning a fourth set that featured four lead changes and holding off a late rally by Delhi to come away with a 25-21 win, forcing a decisive fifth set.

The Broncos took command early in the fifth, opening up a 10-7 lead. Bard responded by winning four of the next five points to tie it up at 11. Delhi then picked up two consecutive points, but the Raptors were able to come back strong, scoring four straight points to earn a 15-13 win in set five and pick up a 3-2 victory in the match.

The Raptors had strong performances from several players in the match. Junior Mikala L'Hote picked up a career-high 16 kills, along with five kills and two blocks. Senior Maracela Talamantes had eight kills and 12 digs, while junior Stella Gatti, freshman Macey Spearko and senior Jewel Smith all added seven kills. Smith added a season-high 36 assists along with 10 digs, and senior Emily Anastasi had 30 digs and eight assists on the night.
