ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. - The Bard College baseball team earned a Liberty League doubleheader split with St. Lawrence University Saturday afternoon, as Mike Pizzuto became the first Bard player to hit two home runs in a single game.
The Raptors topped the Saints of St. Lawrence, 10-4 in Game 1, before Pizzuto crushed two solo home runs during an 18-9 defeat in Game 2.
With the split, Bard's record moved to 13-18 overall and 6-11 in Liberty League play. St. Lawrence meanwhile, is now 4-21 and 3-12.
To open the first game, Brendan Frank (Gansevoort, NY) tripled in a run for the guests, before Pizzuto scored Jordan Myers on a sacrifice fly in the bottom half of the first.
The offense continued in the second inning, as St. Lawrence regained the lead with three runs in the frame. The Raptors were not fazed however, scoring five runs of their own in the bottom of the second to snatch the early lead.Â
Ryan Chipman, Myers and Matt Lasky all knocked in runs on singles, before Rory Maglich and Chris Blake drew bases-loaded walks to add the final two runs of the frame to put Bard up 6-4.Â
From that point on, Bard's starting pitcher, Evan Richardson, settled in and regained his ace form. Richardson finished with a complete game and allowed just one hit from the third inning on.Â
The Raptors' offense continued its hot streak with four more runs in the fourth, as the team rolled to a 10-4 win.Â
Blake, Maglich and Nikolai Grumet each collected two RBIs in the win, while Frank led St. Lawrence with two hits and two RBIs.
In Game 2, the runs continued to pile in fast and furiously, as the bats remained hot for both sides. Unfortunately for Bard, the hosts were unable to slow down or match the Saints' output like in Game 1.Â
St. Lawrence tagged Bard's starter, Frank Ortega, for two runs in the first and one in the second, to take an early 3-0 lead.
That advantage was trimmed to 3-1, when Pizzuto led off the bottom of the second with a home run to left field.
However, the Saints didn't make the same mistake as they had in the earlier contest. The visitors kept their foot on the gas pedal, which propelled them to a nine run explosion in the third inning and a 12-1 lead.Â
The Raptors were able to cut into the deficit as the game progressed, with RBIs from Dillon Daine and Maglich in the fourth and Grumet in the sixth. In the seventh inning, the Raptors added three more runs to make the contest 14-7, but that was as close they would get the rest of the way.Â
In the bottom of the ninth, Pizzuto smacked his second leadoff home run of the game and pushed his batting average to a team high .341 in the process.Â
Pizzuto, Daine, Maglich and Grumet each tallied two RBIs in the effort. Evan O'Keeffe (Hopkinton, NH) finished with a home run, four RBIs and four walks to lead the Saints in Game 2.Â
Ortega picked up the loss for Bard, while Caleb Clarke (Bethel, ME) earned the win following his six innings of work.Â
Both sides will be back in action tomorrow (April 29th) for another doubleheader at Honey Field. First pitch is set for noon and you can follow those games right here.Â
