Rochester downs Bard in Liberty League doubleheader

ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. - The Bard College baseball dropped a pair of games Sunday afternoon, losing 3-0 and 5-2 against the University of Rochester in a Liberty League doubleheader.

In Game One, the Raptors (12-17 overall, 5-10 Liberty League) got a solid outing from starter, Kyle Zigner. Zigner did his best to keep Bard in the opening contest, as he tossed a six-inning complete game and allowed just two earned runs on four hits.

But the Bard bats were unable to provide him any run support in the losing effort.

The Yellowjackets of Rochester (11-11, 11-3) meanwhile, also struggled with offense. The guests only managed four hits in the win, but were able to manufacture three runs with smart plays on the bases.

A first inning RBI groundout from Jack Herman (Gansevoort, NY) got Rochester on the board, before Kyle Trombley (Wilbraham, MA) stole third base and advanced home on a throwing error in the fifth to make it 2-0. The Yellowjackets added another run in the sixth on Herman sacrifice fly.

For Bard, Matt Lasky and Ryan Chipman each collected two hits in the loss.

Luke Meyerson (Rye, NY) tallied the win for Rochester, as he threw a seven-inning complete game, struck out nine and allowed just six hits.

Game Two saw the Raptors rebound offensively, as they were able to score two runs on 11 hits in the effort. However, Rochester's offense also improved in the second game, which enabled the guests to come out on top.

A Steve Pickering (Wilbraham, MA) RBI single in the third, followed by an Aaron Craig (Pelham, NY) sacrifice fly an inning later, put Bard in a 2-0 hole early.

In the sixth, the Yellowjackets added three more runs, as they were able to chase Bard starter, Steve Marotta. Marotta finished with 5.2 innings pitched and allowed four earned runs on six hits.

As the game progressed, Bard continued to get runners on base, but just couldn't find the right pitch to knock them home. Finally, in the ninth inning, the Raptors were able to get on the board thanks to a Lasky RBI single.

During the next at-bat, Rory Maglich scored on a wild pitch, which put Bard within striking distance down 5-2, but the Raptors' rally fell short a few batters later with the tying run at-bat.

Jack Denzer (Lewisville, TX) earned the win for Rochester with his eight shutout innings tossed. Jordan Myers and Chris Blake each recorded two hits in the defeat for Bard.

Up next for the Raptors is one final non-league game, as they travel to New Paltz on April 24th to take on the Hawks. That game is set for 3 p.m. and you can follow it right here.
