ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. - The Bard College baseball team lost both games of a doubleheader Saturday afternoon, falling to the University of Rochester, 4-2 in the first game and 15-11 in the second.
The Raptors dropped to 12-15 overall and 5-8 in the Liberty League, while the Yellowjackets improved to 9-11 and 9-3.
In Game One, Rochester struck first. Aiden Finch (Los Gatos, CA) singled in a run in the top of the fifth, after a Bard error kept the inning alive.
The lead was short lived though, as the Raptors were able to tie the game up just an inning later. Matt Lasky drilled an RBI triple to right field in the sixth, that easily scored Jordan Myers from first.
But just as fast as the game was tied, the lead was lost.
The Yellowjackets jumped back in front in the seventh, when Finch added his second RBI of the day on a double to right field. Later in the frame, RBI singles from Jack Herman (Gansevoort, NY) and Drew Bankovich (Dubois, PA) extended the advantage to 4-1.
The Raptors were able to get a run back in the bottom of the seventh, but were unable to complete the rally.
Evan Richardson took the loss for Bard. He threw 6.1 innings, allowed four runs (three earned) on eight hits and struck out eight.
Will Conroy (Burlington, VT) tallied the win for Rochester. Conroy tossed all seven innings and allowed just two runs on five hits. He also collected seven K's.
While the first game could best be described as a defensive battle, the second game turned out to be the exact opposite. The two teams combined for 26 runs on 33 hits in the second game, as the bats woke up with fury for each side.Â
The Yellowjackets won Game Two, 15-11, as they jumped in front early. Rochester scored five runs in the first, one in the second, two in the third and one in the fourth.Â
However, the Raptors didn't go down without a fight.
Mike Pizzuto opened the scoring for Bard with a sacrifice fly that scored Matt Lasky in the first. Rory Maglich and Jeff Goldrosen slapped RBI singles in the third, while Lee Perry drove in a run with a bases loaded walk.
In the fourth, Pizzuto collected an RBI single to make it, 9-5, before Perry scored on an Esteban Rivera sacrifice fly an inning later.
Rochester did add a tenth run in the sixth inning, but the Raptors just continued to answer.
In the bottom of the seventh, Pizzuto continued his hot afternoon with another RBI single, making the game 10-7. Two batters later, Goldrosen doubled in a run. Later in the inning, Maglich scored on a Rochester wild pitch to cut the game to just 10-9.
However, that was as close as Bard would get the rest of the way. The Yellowjackets added three runs in the eighth and two in the ninth to build a 15-9 advantage.
Bard's final two runs came off a Chris Blake double in the ninth.
Nathan Slenska (Pittsburgh, PA) earned the win for Rochester, while Owen Gabbey (Rochester, NY) collected the save.
Frank Ortega picked up the loss for Bard.
Lasky led the Raptors with four hits (two doubles) in the second game, while Pizzuto finished with three hits and three RBIs. Goldrosen also tallied three hits in the effort.Â
As for Rochester, Aaron Craig (Pelham, NY) powered the win with his four hits and six RBIs.
Up next for each team is a second doubleheader tomorrow (4/22) at Honey Field. The first game is set to begin at noon and you can follow it right here.Â
