Bard suffers defeat in five-set battle at Cobleskill

COBLESKILL, N.Y. - The Bard College women's volleyball team lost an extremely close contest Tuesday night, falling in the fifth and final set to SUNY Cobleskill.

Set scores for the match were 19-25, 25-12, 17-25, 25-23 and 15-10.

The key point in the match came in the fourth set with Bard in control late. The Raptors were sitting pretty, up 23-19 over Cobleskill, before the hosts managed to rally off six straight points to take the set and momentum heading into the final set.

Bard struggled to recover from the fourth-set defeat, falling behind in the fifth set by the score of 10-2 at one point. While the Raptors were able to cut into the deficit at 11-8, the Fighting Tigers were able to hold on and secure the victory.

It was a real Jekyll and Hyde performance for the Raptors (3-13) all evening, as the team struck the ball beautifully in one set, only to follow it up with major struggles in the next one.

Over the five sets, Bard hit .154, -.226, .367, -.091 and .160 to finish with a overall percentage of .051.

The Fighting Tigers of SUNY Cobleskill (5-7) meanwhile, managed a .165 over the five-set contest.

The real differences in the contest though were kills and errors. Bard finished with a season-high 47 kills, while SUNY Cobleskill could only muster 19 kills. That alone should have handed Bard an easy win, but errors ruined that notion.

The Raptors finished with 39 errors in the contest. The Fighting Tigers meanwhile, recorded an astoundingly low four errors over five sets.

Emily Anastasi continued her dynamic play, finishing with 33 digs. The 33 digs broke her own school record in the category, a mark she had set just 10 days ago.

Philippine Alba led Bard with 12 kills on the night, while Alexis Akingbade added 10 kills, and Kaylynn Tran and Maracela Talamantes chipped in nine kills each.

Victoria Chou finished with 32 assists in the losing effort.

Up next for Bard is a tri-match series with The City College of New York and United States Merchant Marine Academy on September 30th. The first match will begin at 11 a.m. and you can follow all those games right here via Live Stats and Live Video.
