POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - The bats remained silent, and the Bard College baseball team dropped a pair of Liberty League game to Vassar on Saturday, 1-0 and 9-1.
A recent offensive slump seemed to coincide with an injury to senior slugger
Adam Carafotes a couple of weeks ago, but he returned to the lineup Saturday and the Raptors still couldn't get the offense going.
In Game One, senior Adam Erkis (Villanova, PA) shut Bard down, tossing a seven-inning one-hitter. He struck out four and didn't walk anyone. He had a perfect game going until
Rory Maglich singled in the sixth, but Maglich was thrown out trying to steal second, and Bard's only scoring opportunity evaporated.
Bard got a great start from
Frank Ortega, who also pitched a complete seven, yielding just six hits and two walks. A two-out RBI single by Taylor Smach (Manlius, NY) was all Ortega gave up, and it proved to be enough. Evan Trausch (San Diego, CA) went 3-for-3 in that game for Vassar.
In Game Two, Vassar jumped on Bard starter
Michael Duffy for six runs in the bottom of the first, and Bard's offensive woes continued. The Raptors collected nine hits in this one and scratched out a run on an RBI double by
Jeff Goldrosen in the sixth, but Vassar's start was too big to overcome.
Denis Shanagher went 2-for-3 with two RBI for Vassar in Game Two. The Brewers are 16-15 overall, 8-7 in the Liberty League.
Goldrosen,
Quinn McInerney and
Preston Gittelson each had two hits for Bard in the nightcap. Bard is 8-23, 3-15.
Sunday's doubleheader with Vassar will be played at Honey Field. First pitch is at noon. Follow it live right here.
