Bard splits Liberty League Opening Day thanks to Richardson's gem

ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. - The Bard College baseball team split a pair of games with St. Lawrence Saturday afternoon, as each team kicked off Liberty League play.

The Raptors won Game One (7 innings), 1-0 and fell in Game Two (9 innings), 12-0.

Bard (6-8, 1-1 LL) received a fantastic pitching performance from starter Evan Richardson in the opening game, as he threw a complete game.

Richardson finished the contest with seven strikeouts, walked just one batter and allowed only five hits over the seven innings.

St. Lawrence (3-4, 1-1 LL) also got a tremendous pitching performance from their starter, as Sam Downes (Shelburne Falls, MA), threw a complete game too. Downes gave up just five hits in the contest and struck out four.

The only true mistake either pitcher made during the whole game, came in the bottom of the sixth inning, when Downes allowed Matt Lasky to lead off the inning with a double.

Lasky quickly moved to third on a passed ball and three batters later, Mike Pizzuto singled him in for the only run of the game.

The problem for the Raptors though, was that single run was the only one they would score in either game on the day.

In Game Two, Bard was held to just three hits total, as the Saints' starting pitcher, Emmett Dunn (Manlius, NY) did his best to one-up Evan Richardson's Game One performance, during St. Lawrence's 12-0 win.

Dunn went eight innings, allowed just three hits and one walk, while striking out seven.

The Raptors were able to win the first game due to some stellar pitching, but that same performance didn't carry over to Game Two, as Bard allowed five runs in the fourth, five more in the seventh inning and two in the eight.

While hits were a rare commodity for the Raptors on Saturday afternoon, Adam Carafotes was able to continue his hitting streak, extending it to 10 games with a single in Game One and double in Game Two.

He also continued his on-base streak, as he has reached base safely in all 14 games this season.

Up next for Bard is day two of its weekend series with St. Lawrence, as the teams play another doubleheader tomorrow afternoon. First pitch is scheduled for 12:00 p.m. and you can follow those game right here via Live Stats and Live Video.
