ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. - A day after being held to just one run over two contests, the Bard College baseball team put up 12 runs in a doubleheader Sunday, on its way to a split with the Saints of St. Lawrence.
St. Lawrence (4-5, 2-2 Liberty League) was able to sneak out a, 5-4 win in Game One as Bard's bats were still warming up. However, in Game Two those bats finally came alive, as the Raptors (7-9, 2-2 LL) soared to an, 8-0 win.
In the first contest of the day,
Dillon Daine started things off with an RBI double in the second inning to put Bard up 1-0.
In the bottom half of the second, the Saints tied up the score and took the lead in the third inning on an Adam Reichel (Camillus, NY) double that scored two runs.
The Raptors used a
David Schlosser SAC bunt in the fourth to cut the lead to, 3-2, but a wild pitch and an error with two outs in the bottom of the fifth pushed the Saints to a, 5-2 lead.
Bard did cut the lead down to 5-4 in the sixth, thanks to two RBI singles, but weren't able to manufacture any in the seventh as St. Lawrence secured its victory.
Raptors' starter,
Kyle Zigner, pitched fairly well on the day. He went four innings, striking out two and issuing no walks. He only gave up three earned runs, but still received the loss.
Evan Reichel (Camillus, NY) earned the win for the Saints. He went five and one-third innings, with four strikeouts and four earned runs.
Adam Carafotes led the way for the Raptors, finishing Game One 3-for-4 with a single, double and a triple. He nearly hit for the cycle, but came up just feet short of a homerun, flying out to right field for the last out of the game.
Schlosser finished with two RBIs and a hit in the loss.
After a tough Game One loss, Bard came out ready to go in Game Two, putting up five runs in the first five innings and eight runs total, as they cruised to a shutout.
Matt Lasky used a groundout to put up an RBI in the first, followed by a Carafotes RBI single in the third and a
Preston Gittelson two-run RBI single in the fourth.
Lee Perry SAC bunted a run in in the fifth. Carafotes continued his weekend tear, knocking in his second RBI in the seventh. Daine used an RBI single to get in on the action and
Esteban Rivera singled in the ninth to give Bard its eight runs.
The Raptors finished Game Two with 14 hits, a huge improvement over the eight total they had Saturday afternoon.
The Saints meanwhile, could only muster six hits in the second game, as
Frank Ortega pitched a stellar game for Bard. He went seven and one-third innings, allowed just five hits and only walked two.
Caleb Clarke (Behtel, ME) didn't far as well for St. Lawrence, as the Raptors lit him up for 10 hits and five runs. He did strike out seven over five innings though.
Even with eight runs in the game, Bard used balanced hitting to do its damage, as six different players finished with an RBI.
Carafotes dominated the weekend, hitting .500 over the four games, with three singles, three doubles and a triple. The senior also extended his hitting streak to 12 games.
Quinn McInerney finished with five hits for the day, while Daine went an incredible 5-for-7 on the afternoon, with a double, a triple and two walks.
Up next for Bard, a home and away series with Skidmore College. The first two contests will be at Bard on Saturday, April 8th beginning at noon. You can follow those games right here.
