Raptors fall in UVC opener

ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. - The Bard College men's volleyball team lost to New York University, 3-0, Wednesday night to open United Volleyball Conference play.

Set scores in the match were 25-16, 25-16 and 25-17.

The Raptors (1-9, 0-1 UVC) opened the match by trading points with the Violets of NYU (5-3, 1-0 UVC), as the set progressed to an early, 6-6, tie. After that point, NYU took control, scoring seven of the next eight points to take a 13-7 lead. 

Bard was able to cut the lead to, 15-12, on a kill from Mahir Sheikh, but NYU responded with a four point run to get the lead up to seven.

From there, the two sides traded points, until NYU scored the final two points of the set to wrap the opening frame up, 25-16.

In the second set, Bard kept the score within four points most of set, before the Violets started to take control. The visitors eventually built a, 22-13, before the Raptors responded with three straight points to cut into the lead late.

However, NYU answered with its own three point rally to end the set, 25-16.

The third set featured big leads for NYU, as the team jumped out to scores of 7-1 and 12-3. The Raptors responded though, rallying when the score hit, 14-5, with five straight points.

But as soon as Bard started to catch up, the Violets responded with a run of their own, scoring eight of the next nine points to take a 22-11 advantage.

The visitors would go on to win the set, 25-17. 

For the night, Bard hit -.052 to NYU's .247. NYU also won the errors battle, scored more aces and recorded more blocks than the Raptors did. 

Tristan Kozul led the hosts with five kills and two blocks, while Tyler Zowaski had six digs and Sheikh finished with 10 assists. 

Alex Li (Cupertino, CA) led the way for the Violets, with his 12 kills on .857 hitting. Matin Bikdeli (Irvine, CA) added 12 assists. 

Up next for the Raptors, a doubleheader on February 11th, against Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Nazareth College in Rochester. That first match will kick-off at 1:30 p.m. and you can follow those contests right here via Live Video and Live Stats.
