Game Recap: Men's Volleyball |

Raptors prevail over CCNY in four sets

ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. - The Bard College men's volleyball team outlasted the City College of New York, 3-1, Saturday afternoon in a non-conference matchup.

Set scores for the match were, 25-20, 24-26, 25-17 and 25-20.

The Raptors (2-11) opened the day on fire, hitting .370 in the first set.

That percentage allowed Bard to jump out to a commanding, 22-12, lead late in the set, before the Beavers of CCNY (2-6) cut into the deficit to make the first set respectable.

From there though, Bard couldn't recover its hitting magic, as the team hit just .146, .233 and .029 over the next three sets to finish with a .182 hitting percentage on the afternoon.

As a result, it allowed CCNY to get back into the contest.

The second set in particular was tough, as errors killed the Raptors in the frame. The set was mostly back and forth throughout until midway through, when the Beavers built up a 20-14 lead.

Following a Raptors' timeout that allowed the players to regroup, the hosts rallied off seven straight points to take the lead back at, 21-20.

However, unforced errors did them in, as three of the next six points for CCNY were on Bard mistakes, which allowed the visitors to steal their only set of day.

The third set was much better for Bard, as they were able to take control late in the frame.

After each side battled to a, 16-16 tie score, the Raptors rallied off nine of the next 10 points to take the set.

The final set was more of the same, as Bard built up a comfortable lead, before CCNY made it close at the end. However, the Raptors wouldn't allow anymore slip ups, and finished the match off in four sets.

The win was even more impressive when you consider that Bard was missing its leading setter, Mahir Sheikh, due to injury.

As a result, Shane McDonald had to man the role and he filled in admirably. The senior was able to collect 29 assists in contest.

Alex Adams led the team with 13 kills and seven blocks, while Tyler Zowaski and Tristan Kozul each recorded 12 digs in the game.

CCNY was led by Sebastjano Aga (Tirana, Albania), who finished the afternoon with a game-high 17 kills, while Oleksandr Boychuk (Flushing, NY) added 33 assists for the Beavers.

Up next for Bard is a road matchup at Sarah Lawrence College on February 22nd. That game begins at 7:00 p.m. and you can follow it right here.
