ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. - In soccer, sometimes all you need is one moment of brilliance to change the outcome.
Katie Hopper provided that moment Saturday afternoon, as her goal led Bard College to a 1-0 win over Liberty League newcomer Ithaca College.
Avalon Qian intercepted a pass in Ithaca's defensive third, then beat three Ithaca defenders consecutively with some nifty dribbling. Her work created an opening for a pass across the top of the box on the ground. She found
Caroline Gluck, who played a deft pass off for Hopper, who was moving quickly toward goal. She one-timed an arching shot that got over the hand of the Ithaca keeper, went off the bottom of the crossbar, and in for a 1-0 lead in the 32nd minute.
The Raptors (7-4 overall, 1-3 Liberty League) didn't have to do much offensively the rest of the way and played solid defense, limiting Ithaca's chances and completing the shutout.
Ithaca (3-8 overall, 0-4 Liberty League) did press forward, the Bombers best chance to equalize coming in the 83rd minute. A free kick from 40 yards found the head of Kate Kohler (West Islip, NY), and although she got good power on it,
Tessa Greenhalgh was there to stop it. She finished with five saves and collected her fourth shutout.
Up next for the Raptors is a trip to Canton, N.Y., to take on St. Lawrence in a Liberty League matchup. That game is set for October 13th and kickoff is at 4 p.m. Â
