SCHENECTADY, N.Y. - The Bard College women's soccer team played like its Liberty League playoff dreams were on the line, because they were.
In the first half, Bard outshot Union, 8-6, hit the crossbar once and forced a goal line save by a defender. In the second half, the Raptors hit the crossbar again and appeared poised to score and jump into contention for the sixth and final conference playoff spot.
But a goal by Union's Katie Monahan (Ipswitch, MA) in the 77th minute let all the air out of the balloon, and with Bard desperately pressing forward late, the Dutchwomen tacked on another goal in the 88th minute and prevailed, 2-0. The Raptors aren't eliminated from playoff contention, but they'll have to win their two remaining Liberty League games and get help to qualify.
Union improved to 6-5-2 overall, 1-4-1 in the Liberty League. Bard fell to 7-7, 1-6.
Off a corner kick by
Caroline Gluck in the 15th minute, a shot by
Giuliana Scanni hit the crossbar. In the 38th minute, Bard's pressure produced three shots in quick succession, one by Scanni saved by Union keeper Allison Sorkenn (River Edge, NJ), then back-to-back shots from
Dylan McDonald. The first was saved by Sorkenn, but the rebound came back to McDonald, and her quick shot was cleared off the line by a Union defender.
In the second half,
Susan Andreas hit the crossbar for Bard in the 75th minute, but Union got the eventual game-winner two minutes later. Union outshot Bard, 8-2, in the second half. Sorkenn finished with three saves.
Scanni produced four shots for the Raptors.
Tessa Greenhalgh made four saves.
Bard's final home game of the 2017 season will be played on Saturday vs. RIT. It will be Senior Day for
Avalon Qian,
Carla Sanchez and
Emily Weisman.
