ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. - The Bard College women's soccer team fell to the Rochester Institute of Technology, 2-0, Saturday afternoon on Senior Day.
Senior Day is always a bittersweet moment for teams and athletic programs.Â
On one hand, its a great chance to celebrate the senior athletes and all that they have achieved over the past four years. On the flip side, it means that this most likely is the last time those same seniors will ever suit up for the program again.Â
That was the case today, as the women's soccer team played its final home contest of the 2017 season. While seniors
Avalon Qian,
Carla Sanchez and
Emily Weisman will suit up at least twice more this season, those contests will be on the road.
Before the game began today, all three were honored on-field for their achievements and accomplishments over the past four years. The trio had pictures taken with friends and family and received framed jerseys, as well as other gifts from teammates.
Bard Athletics would like to take this opportunity to thank the three for all that they have done.
From continuing to push the women's soccer program forward to the work they've done on and off the field in the Bard community, the three seniors have truly represented what it means to be a Bard College Student-Athlete.
It was an honor to have you at Bard these past four years and we wish you all nothing but the best in your future endeavors.Â
Following the Senior Day activities, the Raptors had to quickly shift focus to the task at hand, which was a tough RIT team.
While the Tigers of RIT controlled possession for much of the first half, the Bard defense held firm and gave the visitors no real chances on frame.Â
It wasn't until late in the half that RIT was able to get on the board. The Tigers scored twice over the final five minutes of the half to go into halftime up, 2-0.
The first came off a gorgeous through ball in the 41st minute, that found a streaking Marla Roberts (Penfield, NY), who buried the ball into the top left corner.Â
The Tigers doubled their lead just 12 seconds before the halftime whistle sounded, when Riley Yankowich scored off a corner kick.Â
Bard responded in the second half with much-improved offensive build up, getting the ball in close to RIT's goal. In the end though, the Raptors just couldn't find the final pass or opening to secure a goal.
Tessa Greenhalgh finished the game with two saves for Bard, while Weisman recorded a shot on goal in her final home game.Â
Up next for Bard is a non-conference matchup, as the team travels to Albany to take on Albany College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences on October 25th at 7 p.m.Â
