ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. - The Bard College women's volleyball team lost a pair of non-league matches on Saturday, falling to Mount Holyoke and Hunter by 3-0 scores.
There were two courts going at Bard, and on Court 2 at the same time, Hunter defeated New Paltz, 3-1, and New Paltz beat Mount Holyoke, 3-1.
Mount Holyoke (8-9) dispatched Bard 25-15, 25-17 and 25-17. The first set wasn't close, but Bard hung in there in the second set, tying the set at 16-16 on a kill by
Kaylynn Tran. A service error, a kill, and four straight attack errors by Bard gave the Lyons the push they needed to take the second set.
Down 8-3 early in the third set, the Raptors (4-20) fought back and cut the deficit to 12-11. But a seven-point run by Mount Holyoke put the set away.
Sasha Simine (Kitchener, ONT) led the winners with six kills (.316) and four blocks. Sarah Caggiano (Leonardtown, MD) had seven kills and seven digs, while Brayden Walden (McKinney, TX) finished with 23 assists.
Philippine Alba led Bard with eight kills and 10 digs.
Jewel Smith had a dozen assists, and
Emily Anastasi led the Raptors with 15 digs.
In the second match of the day, Hunter (20-3) swept Bard, 26-24, 25-13 and 25-16.
The Hawks were surprised by Bard in the first set after a grueling four-set win over New Paltz. After going down 4-0 early, Bard came back, took the lead, and appeared to be on the way to taking the first set with an Alba kill made it 19-14. Hunter pushed back and had some success closing the gap, but an attack error gave Bard set point at 24-21. Hunter scored the next five points, however, on three kills and two attack errors, and took the first set, 26-24.
The Raptors played from behind in both the second and third sets, as Hunter closed it out. The Hawks were led by Emily Wasson (Los Angeles, CA), who had nine kills (.421) and six digs. Julia Connolly (Deer Park, NY) added eight kills (.316) and nine digs, while Miranda Hogan (Bay Shore, NY) finished with 12 digs and 29 assists.
