Bard edges FDU-Florham on Witte strike

ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. - The Bard College women's soccer team edged FDU-Florham, 1-0, in a non-league game on Saturday afternoon.

The teams played a scoreless, even, tight first half, with shots 4-4 at the break.

Neither team was able to gain a real edge in possession throughout the second half, but there were scoring opportunities, and Bard made the most of one in the 67th minute.

Avalon Qian hit a bouncing pass across the top of the box to Casey Witte, who one-timed an arcing shot toward the net. The shot initially looked to be too high, but at the last second it dipped just under the crossbar, and over the fingers of Florham keeper Annie George (Denville, NJ) for a 1-0 lead.

Bard (4-2) had to work to make the lead hold up. In the 83rd minute, a free kick was headed on goal by Kristen Fila (West Chester, PA), but Kelsey O'Brien made a great save. And in the 87th minute, Fila nearly scored again, except this time the post stopped her. As Fila dribbled toward the net, she was pressured from defenders on each side, so she had to shoot earlier than she wanted. The ball went over O'Brien's head and looked destined for the back of the net. It hit the inside of the post and ricocheted back past O'Brien and Fila before it was cleared by Bard defenders.

George made eight saves for the Red Devils, 3-3-2.

Chloe Ramos, who played the first half, made three saves for Bard, and O'Brien made three saves in the second half.
