ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. – The Bard College baseball team lost both ends of a Liberty League doubleheader with RPI on Wednesday, 7-4 and 4-0. Both were seven-inning games.
The Raptors fell to 6-13 overall and 1-3 in the Liberty League. RPI is 6-15, 5-3.
These games were moved from Troy to Annandale due to unplayable field conditions, so Bard was the visiting team, and the Raptors scored twice in the top of the first of Game One.
David Schlosser and
Matt Lasky hit back-to-back singles to open the game, Schlosser stole third and scored on a sacrifice fly by
Adam Carafotes, and Lasky scored later on an RBI single by
Alec Montecalvo.
The Engineers tied it in the bottom of the first, then went ahead 3-2 on an RBI single by J.T. Sawyer (Johnsonville, NY) in the bottom of the fourth. Three unearned runs in the bottom of the sixth made it 7-2, and Bard needed a rally to extend the game.
Jack Hawke singled to lead off the top of the seventh, and so did pinch-hitter
Dylan Long. After a pitching change, Schlosser singled to load the bases with no outs. A run scored on a fielder's choice grounder by Lasky, and Carafotes singled to drive in Long, so it was 7-4 with one out with runners on first and second. The tying run was at the plate.
A flyout and strikeout ended the game.
Aaron Kalish (1-2) got the win for RPI, giving up four runs over six innings. He walked one and struck out seven.
Evan Richardson (0-3) took the loss for Bard, yielding three runs over four innings.
Yahriel Jimenez (San Juan, PR) went 2-for-3 with a triple for the Engineers. Schlosser, Carafotes, Montecalvo and Hawke had two hits apiece for Bard.
Game Two was all about RPI starter Brendan McNerney (Ardsley, NY), who threw a complete game three-hitter, striking out six. He held Bard without a hit after the second inning.
JP Fisher (0-1) gave up four runs (two earned) on five hits over five innings and took the loss.
Sam Lawrence (Chicago, IL) homered and drove in a pair for RPI.
Up next for Bard is a four-game Liberty League series against St. Lawrence. The games were scheduled for Canton, N.Y., but field conditions and the forecast have prompted the site to be changed to Honey Field in Annandale. Bard will be the away team in all four games. Follow them live right here.
