SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – The Bard College baseball team was swept in a Liberty League doubleheader at Skidmore on Saturday, 8-4 and 12-3.
Skidmore improves to 12-22 overall and 7-15 in the Liberty League, while the Raptors fall to 9-25 and 4-14. The teams will complete the four-game series on Sunday in Annandale.
Skidmore used the long ball and a complete-game effort from Andrew Aikins (Rumson, NJ) to take Game One by a score of 8-4. He gave up four runs (two earned) on seven hits, and fanned two.
Bard scored twice in the top of the first on an RBI groundout by
Alec Montecalvo and a two-out RBI single by
Mike Pizzuto. It stayed that way until the bottom of the third, when Skidmore drew a pair of two-out walks, and Shawn Klier (Mendham, NJ) homered to right to make it 3-2. The Thoroughbreds didn't trail again.
A two-out, two-run double by Chris Lorenz (Fair Haven, NJ) made it 5-2 in the fourth, and after Bard had trimmed the lead to 5-4, a two-out, two-run homer by Stephen Gilbert (Franklin, MA) in the eighth was the dagger. Gilbert went 3-for-4 with two RBI.
Jack Hawke collected two hits for the Raptors.
Game Two was 3-3 through three innings, but Skidmore put it away with two in the sixth, two in the seventh and five in the eighth. Will Potter (Charlotte, VT) went 2-for-3 with a double and four RBI.
Hawke,
David Schlosser and
Alec Montecalvo had two hits apiece for Bard.
