ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. – The University of Rochester baseball team took a pair of games from Bard, 8-1 and 5-4, in Liberty League action on Saturday.
The Yellowjackets (16-12, 9-5 Liberty League) got a great pitching performance to win Game 1, and they worked out of a major jam in the bottom of the ninth to win Game 2. The sweep pushed Rochester's winning streak to six and Bard's losing streak to seven.
Game 1 was all about Rochester ace Evan Janifer (Montclair, NJ), who threw a seven-inning complete game. He scattered seven hits, struck out six and didn't walk a batter.
Rochester got all the runs it would need in the top of the first on three hits and a walk. Senior Dan Warren (Fairfield, CT) went 3-for-4 with three RBI.
Zach Hayes (2-3) took the loss, giving up five earned runs over five innings.
Adam Carafotes and
Jack Hawke had two hits apiece for Bard (8-21, 3-10).
The Raptors were down 5-1 going into the bottom of the eighth of Game 2 before making things interesting.
Matt Lasky and
Jack Hawke singled to start the inning, and a sacrifice bunt by
David Schlosser plated Lasky to make it 5-2.
JP Fisher beat out a bunt single, and Hawke scored on an errant throw to make it 5-3. It stayed that way into the bottom of the ninth.
Bard loaded the bases with no outs.
Alec Montecalvo and
Mike Pizzuto singled, and
Preston Gittelson reached on a fielder's choice bunt. Lasky grounded into a double play, making it 5-4, and Hawke popped out to end the game.
Warren (1-3) got the win, giving up two earned runs over eight innings; Luke Meyerson (Rye, NY) got the save after working his way into then out of trouble. Grant Kilmer (Frisco, TX) drove in two runs for Rochester.
Steve Marotta (1-5) took the loss, giving up five runs over eight innings. Montecalvo and Fisher had two hits apiece.
