Raptors split doubleheader with RPI in Liberty League opener

ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. – The Bard College baseball team split a doubleheader with RPI in its Liberty League opener on Saturday, losing the first game, 8-2, and winning the nightcap, 11-6.

It was Bard's first win over RPI since joining the Liberty League in 2015.

Three Bard errors and five unearned runs made the difference in the Game One loss. RPI scored six times in the first two innings, and Stephen Schiavone (White Plains, NY) tossed a seven-inning complete game, allowing two runs on eight hits.

Adam Carafotes homered and went 3-or-3 for Bard. Quinn McInerney hit an RBI double.

In the second game, Bard (6-11, 1-1 Liberty League) put up five runs in the bottom of the first on three hits and two RPI errors. The outburst was keyed by a two-run single by Preston Gittelson.

RPI scored once in the second, twice in the third and once in the fourth to cut Bard's lead to 5-4. But Bard scored four times in the bottom of the fourth.

David Schlosser was hit by a pitch and Matt Lasky singled. One out later, JP Fisher singled to drive in Schlosser, making it 6-4. After a pitching change, freshman Mike Pizzuto hit an infield single to load the bases, and Quinn McInerney drew a bases-loaded walk to make it 7-4. A fielder's choice and a wild pitch plated two more runs: 9-4.

RPI (4-15, 3-3 Liberty League) got two back in the top of the fifth to make it 9-6, but Bard scored an unearned run in the seventh and another run in the eighth on an RBI single by Jack Hawke to make it 11-6.

Zach Hayes (1-1) got the win with five innings of four-hit relief, yielding just one run. Gittelson went 2-for-4 with three RBI, Nick Kifyak had two hits, and JP Fisher went 2-for-3 with two walks.

A doubleheader schedule for Sunday at RPI has been postponed. Tenative plans are to play the games on Monday at RPI, with playing at Bard's Honey Field a possibility. Stay tuned.
