Raptors swept by Washington College in road trip finale

CHESTERTOWN, Md. - The Bard College baseball team wrapped up a five-game Mid-Atlantic road trip with a doubleheader sweep at the hands of Washington College, 1-0 and 9-6, on Saturday afternoon.

Bard is 5-9; Washington College is 15-2-1.

Game 1 was all about the starting pitchers. For Washington, it was sophomore lefty P.J. Mikulus - for Bard, freshman righty John Wendt.

Mikulus (Plainview, NY) limited Bard to five hits over nine innings. He struck out five and didn't walk a batter. Wendt gave up one hit over eight innings, walked four and struck out one. The errorless game came down to the ninth inning.

In the top of the ninth, Jack Hawke led off with a double but got picked off by the catcher. In the bottom of the ninth, the Shoremen got a leadoff single from Luke D'Ostillo (Hamden, CT) and a walkoff double from Aaron Barclay (Crofton, MD) - both off of Bard reliever Rami Masani, who took the loss.

In the second game, four errors and four unearned runs did the Raptors in. A pair of unearned runs made it 2-0 in the bottom of the second, and two more unearned runs were part of a four-run third for Washington, and it was 6-0 leading to the fourth inning.

Bard got one back in the top of the fifth when Matt Lasky walked and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Nikolai Grumet, but Washington scored once in the bottom of the inning to make it 7-1. In the top of the sixth, an RBI groundout by Lasky plated Preston Gittelson to make it 7-2, but the Raptors left them full with a bases-loaded strikeout to end the threat. At that point in the game, Bard was 1-for-10 with runners in scoring position.

It was 9-2 in the top of the ninth when pinch-hitter Mike Pizzuto hit a two-out, two-run single to make it 9-4 - his first college hit - and Adam Carafotes followed with a two-run homer to left, making it 9-6. A groundout ended the game.

Carafotes went 3-for-5. He hit .363 on the five-game trip with four doubles, two homers and seven RBI.

Twenty-four of Bard's next 26 games are in the Liberty League. Bard's next game is against a Liberty League opponent - Vassar - but it is not a league game this year. That'll be a single game played on Honey Field on Wednesday at 3:30. Follow it via Live Stats or Live Video right here.
