Raptors fall to Washington College, 7-4

CHESTERTOWN, Md. - The Bard College baseball team lost to Washington College, 7-4, in a non-conference game on Friday afternoon. It was the first meeting between the schools.

For the third straight game on this Spring Break trip, Bard scored in the first inning. JP Fisher homered to right field to give Bard a 1-0 lead. But Washington starter Dan Jarrell (Alexandria, VA) settled down and kept Bard at bay while the Shoremen eventually took the lead.

After tying it up in the bottom of the second, Washington (14-2-1) went ahead 3-1 in the fourth on a two-run homer by Charlie Meder (Fairfield, CT). Bard cut it to 3-2 with an unearned run in the fifth, but the Shoremen pushed three across in the fifth, chasing Bard starter Steve Marotta, then scored one more in the sixth to take a 7-2 lead.

A single by Fisher, a double by Adam Carafotes and a two-run single by Alec Montecalvo cut the deficit to 7-4 in the eighth, but a strikeout and double play killed that rally, and Bard went down in order in the ninth.

Jarrell (3-0) gave up two run on three hits of 6.2 innings, striking out five. Matt Tancredi (Wall, NJ) had three hits, two RBI and scored two runs for the winners.

Marotta (1-2) gave up six runs on seven hits over four innings and took the loss. Fisher was the only Bard player with more than one hit, as he went 2-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored.

The Raptors (5-7) finish their Spring Break trip with two more games against Washington College on Saturday, starting at noon. Follow the action live right here.
