CHICOPEE, Mass. - The Bard College men's volleyball team avenged an early-season 3-0 loss to Elms College with a thrilling victory in a five-setter at Elms on Saturday.
Daniel Webster College swept Elms first in the tri-match, then swept Bard. In the final match of the day, the Raptors edged the Blazers 25-22, 17-25, 27-25, 24-26 and 15-11.
It was at the season-opening Wildcat Invitational hosted by SUNY Polytechnic when Elms dispatched Bard 25-17, 25-19 and 25-21. The first set Saturday was tied 14 times, the last time at 22-22. A service error gave Bard a 23-22 lead, and
Troy Robertson had a huge solo block on Elms' next attack, creating set point. A kill by
Shane McDonald won it, 25-22.
After losing the second set 25-17, the third set was tied more than a dozen times, the last time at 25-25. A kill by
Gabe Adams-Keane put Elms on the precipice, and an attack error gave Bard the set, 27-25.
The Blazers were on the brink again in the fourth set, down 24-23, but three consecutive kills forced a fifth and deciding set.
The key run in the fifth set came when, with the score 8-8, Bard rattled off four straight points to go up 12-8. Two were kills from
Jesse Small, one was setter
Kai Bernier-Chen's only kill of the game, and the other was an Elms attack error.
The Blazers cut it to 13-10 and 14-11, but an attack error ended the match and the Raptors had their revenge.
Elms (10-13) got 14 kills from Angel Castro (Carolina, PR), 25 assists from Kahlil Peters (Hartford, CT) and 14 digs from Daniel Bondarovsky (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil).
Bard (6-19) got 14 kills and nine digs from
Alex Adams;13 kills and five digs from
Jesse Small; eight kills from
Shane McDonald, seven kills from Adams-Keane and six kills and six blocks from
Troy Robertson. Bernier-Chen had 25 assists and eight digs, and
Mahir Sheikh added 18 assists and six digs.
Tyler Zowaski led the team with 20 digs.
Earlier in the day, Daniel Webster (14-9) defeated Bard 25-11, 25-15 and 25-20. Small had six kills, Sheikh had 13 assists, and Zowaski had 15 digs.
