ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. - It's unusual in a tight game for the lead to only change hands once, but that's what happened when Bard College and Clarkson University got together for a Liberty League men's basketball game on Saturday afternoon.
Bard led for the vast majority of the game, but Clarkson rallied late, took the lead with three minutes left, and never gave it back. Clarkson hung on, 62-59, and Bard has lost eight consecutive games, all in the Liberty League.
This one was especially painful. The Raptors had fallen into a pattern in the last few games of getting behind by double digits, then coming all the way back, only to lose. That didn't happen this time but the result was the same.
Bard led by as much as seven in the first half, and it was 33-28 at the break. The Raptors' lead was up to nine early in the second half, but Clarkson hung around and the second half was nip and tuck the entire time - eerily similar to Bard's 54-53 win at Clarkson just a few weeks ago.
Bard led, 50-49, with 4:15 left, and that's when the game changed. Clarkson put together a run to take the lead, 56-50, with 1:29 left. A put-back by Bard's
Armando Dunn made it 56-52 with 64 seconds on the clock.
Down four with a minute left, Bard was determined not to foul, and Clarkson moved the ball around on the outside, trying to eat the clock. With just a few ticks left on the shot clock, Clarkson's Conrad Zampier (East Greenbush, NY) provided the dagger with a long three-pointer, and it was 59-52 with 35 seconds remaining.
Bard cut it to three in the final seconds, but Zampier calmly sank a pair of free throws to clinch it with seven seconds left.
Zampier and Felix Abongo (Beacon, NY) led Clarkson with 17 points apiece. Derek Hart (Poughkeepsie, NY) added 16 points and seven rebounds.
Bard got a game-high 24 points from
Emmanuel Rainey, 10 points and seven rebounds from
Brandon Cunningham, and nine points and 11 rebounds from Dunn.
Up next for Bard is a Liberty League game against Rochester Institute of Technology on Friday night at 8. Follow it live right here.
