ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. - When you're on an eight-game losing streak, hosting the highest-scoring team in the league would not be your first choice.
That's the hand, including a couple of injuries, that the Bard College men's basketball team was dealt on Friday night.
The Raptors responded with one of their most complete performances of the season, defeating Rochester Institute of Technology, 67-59, in a Liberty League game.
Bard got off to a good start by defending the three-point line well - a region where the Tigers thrive - and by extending their own possessions deep into the shot clock. RIT, averaging almost 77 points per game, had 30 at halftime and went 2-for-11 from beyond the arc in the first 20 minutes. The league's leading scorer, A.J. Horde (Oak Park, MI) had four points at halftime, and Bard trailed, 30-29.
The game changed in the second half, as the Raptors got big contributions from players who don't usually see a lot of playing time.
Bard led, 41-38, with 12:50 left. Bard freshman
Ezekiel Demasio banked one in inside for the first two points of his college career. After RIT cut it to 43-40,
Zach Goodman hit a three-pointer to make the lead six. After an RIT miss, freshman
Merritt Miller hit a jumper, and it was 48-40. After another RIT miss, Goodman made a layup and it was 50-40 with 9:14 left. Time out, RIT.
Prior to Friday night, Miller had played in six games, and Demasio three. Goodman had averaged five minutes a game over a dozen games.
Horde scored the first five points out of the time out to cut the deficit to five, but an old-fashioned three-point play by
Armando Dunn and a jumper from
DeVahnte Mosley made it 10 again with 5:55 to go. RIT cut it to eight with a couple of late threes, but it was too late. The Tigers fell to 10-10 overall, 6-5 in the Liberty League.
Dunn, along with
Harry Johnson, can be credited with bothering Horde to the point of frustration. The diminuitive guard finished with 13 points, five rebounds and five steals. He was averaging 20 points per game. Sheldon Clay (Detroit, MI) added 10 points and 11 rebounds.
Mosley led Bard with 19 points, and he added nine rebounds. Dunn had 12 points and nine rebounds; Johnson had 11 points and three assists; and Goodman had 10 points and three assists.
Brandon Cunningham had eight points, 12 rebounds, two steals, two assists and a block. The Raptors are 7-14 overall, and still breathing at 4-8 in the Liberty League.
