ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. - It took a really long time for Vassar to stop making shots on Tuesday night. About 30 minutes, in fact.
By that time, the Brewers had a 16-point lead and there were about 10 minutes left in the game at Bard. It was a big game, too, considering that last place and first place in the Liberty League were separated by two games going into the evening's festivities.
The Raptors rallied when the Brewers finally went cold, and they cut it to four a couple of times in the final minute, but the damage had already been done. Bard never got all the way back and lost, 65-61.
With its sixth straight loss, Bard fell to 6-12 overall, 3-6 in the Liberty League.
It was tough right from the get-go, because Vassar senior Erickson Wasyl (Durham, CT) came out firing, making 4-of-6 three-pointers in the first half. The Brewers shot a better percentage from way out there (6-for-13) than they did from inside the arc (6-for-18) and had a comfortable 32-23 lead at halftime. Bard shot just 30 percent from the field in the first half, and the league's second-leading scorer,
DeVahnte Mosley, had been held scoreless.
The Raptors cut the deficit to five a couple of times early in the second half, but a couple of Wasyl three-pointers keyed a 15-5 run, and Vassar has its biggest lead, 54-38, with 10:28 left in the game.
That's when Vassar stopped making shots. Bard used the opportunity to rattle off 10 straight points, culminating with a dunk from
Brandon Cunningham, and the lead was six with 4:53 left. Another dunk by Cunningham, this time on a put-back, cut it to five a minute later, but the Raptors simply could not get the big shot they needed to make it all the way back.
Mosley made 1-of-2 foul shots with 53 seconds left to cut it to 59-55, but Vassar made 6-of-8 from the foul line from there, putting it away in spite of consecutive three-pointers from Mosley in the final 10 seconds.
Wasyl finished with 21 points. Jesse Brown (Barrington, RI) added 12 points and nine rebounds, and Mickey Adams (Natick, MA) chipped in with 11 points for Vassar.
Mosley scored all 18 of his points in the second half to lead Bard.
Emmanuel Rainey added 17 points. Cunningham had a huge game with 14 points, six rebounds and five blocks. And freshman
Armando Dunn contributed seven points and nine rebounds.
Bard has seven games left to work its way back into the playoff picture, beginning Friday at home against St. Lawrence. Tip is at 8. Follow it live right here.
