ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. - There's nothing more exhausting than digging ditches, then crawling out of them only to dig more ditches.
Lately, that's how it's been going for the Bard College men's basketball team. As has been the recent pattern, the Raptors dug a hole in the first half, came back, then dug another hole in the second half, and came back again.
For the seventh straight game, they lost. St. Lawrence beat Bard, 70-60, on Friday night, and the Raptors' playoff hopes have likely reached desperation level. Bard is 6-13 overall, 3-7 in the Liberty League with six conference games left. It looks possible, maybe even likely, that 8-8 or 9-7 could get a team into the playoffs this year, so it's go time.
St. Lawrence (9-7, 5-3) never trailed in the game. The Saints got up 12 in the first half, but led by only 28-26 at the break after the Raptors ended the half on a 13-4 run.
St. Lawrence opened the second half on a 14-2 run, however, and the bulge got as big as 15 with just over 11 minutes left. Bard rallied again, scoring 10 straight points to make it 49-44 with eight minutes to go. With six minutes left, the lead was still five, but the Raptors never got closer.
A season-high 21 turnovers was the culprit this time, as St. Lawrence turned them into 16 points, and the Saints also had a 42-33 rebounding edge - 20 of them offensive boards.
Freshman Ben Crawford (Framingham, MA) led the visitors with 20 points and 13 rebounds. Riley Naclerio (Latham, NY) added 14 points and six rebounds, while Kyle Edwards (Norwich, NY) and Willie Zachery (Atlanta, GA) added 11 points apiece.
Bard was led by
Emmanuel Rainey and
DeVahnte Mosley, who had 19 points apiece.
Brandon Cunningham added 13 points, nine rebounds, three blocks and three steals.
Up next for Bard is a Liberty League game against Clarkson on Saturday afternoon at 4 in Annandale. Follow the action live right here.
