Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Raptors drop a heartbreaker to Skidmore, 70-68

ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. - Down six with 40 seconds left, Bard's only hope was that Skidmore would miraculously start missing foul shots or inexplicably turn the ball over a couple of times.

That's exactly what happened.

So having the ball with 11 seconds left, down two, was a gift.

Unfortunately, the Raptors were unable to get a shot off and lost a Liberty League game to Skidmore, 70-68, on Saturday. After beating Union and Skidmore on the road two weeks ago, the Raptors lost to Union and Skidmore at home this weekend to fall to 6-9 overall, 3-3 in the Liberty League. Skidmore is 8-6, 3-3.

The Raptors made 6-of-10 from behind the three-point line and led by as many as a dozen in the first half, though Skidmore survived and trailed 41-34 at halftime.

Things appeared to get a whole lot tougher for the visitors when freshman phenom Edvinas Rupkus (Lithuania), who had 23 against Bard two weeks ago, picked up his fourth foul in the first minute of the second half. He sat down with five points.

But the Thoroughbreds battled back, putting together an 18-5 run over a five-minute stretch to take a 64-56 lead with 4:16 to go. The lead stayed between four and eight from there, and when Rupkus re-entered the game in the final minute, his layup made it 70-64 with 47 seconds left. It appeared all Skidmore had to do was take care of the ball and make some late foul shots.

DeVahnte Mosley made one of two foul shots to cut it to five, and then Rupkus missed the front end of a one-and-one opportunity with 27 seconds left. Rupkus fouled Emmanuel Rainey and took a seat for good with 25 seconds left, and Rainey made one of two to make it 70-66.

Skidmore turned it over on the ensuing possession due to a full court press, and Rainey made a pair of free throws with 14 seconds left to make it 70-68. The Raptors fouled immediately on the inbounds play, and Martin Bedulskij (Lithuania) missed the first. Then he missed the second, but Bard batted the rebound of the bounds.

Skidmore then turned it over again on the inbounds play, giving Bard 11 seconds to try to tie it or win it.

Rainey got double-teamed as he tried to enter the lane, the ball got loose, and the buzzer sounded as players scrambled on the floor trying to grab it. After winning three straight to start the conference slate, Bard has lost three straight. Amazingly, all six games have been decided by eight points or less.

Erik Sanders (New York, NY) led five Skidmore players in double figures with 18 points.

Rainey led Bard with 20 points; Mosley finished with 18 points and five rebounds, and Harry Johnson chipped in with 12 points and three assists.

The Raptors are back on the road next weekend, taking on Hobart and RIT. Follow both games live right here.
