Raptors force extras with ninth-inning rally, settle for split with Skidmore (photo gallery)

ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. - The Bard College baseball team won a tight first game, 4-2, in Saturday's doubleheader against Skidmore College, the team's fourth straight win.

In Game 2, they got down 6-1 early and a split looked inevitable.

The Raptors clawed their way back into it, scoring two in the eighth and three in the ninth to force extra innings, but they ended up settling for a split anyway, Skidmore prevailing 10-8 in 12.

The teams will play two more on Sunday in Saratoga, the 2015 finale for both squads.

Bard and Skidmore combined for just 10 hits in Saturday's first game, so it came down to a few key plays. David Schlosser walked and later scored on a squeeze bunt by Alec Montecalvo to give the Raptors a 1-0 lead after one inning. In the second, Bard went up 2-0 when Nick Kifyak singled, stole second and later scored on an RBI groundout by Steve Marotta.

There was a lot of small ball being played by both teams because nobody was hitting too much. Zach Hayes went five innings for Bard, giving up just two hits and one unearned run in the fourth. A two-run double by Montecalvo gave Bard a 4-1 lead in the fifth, and it stayed that way until the top of the seventh.

Skidmore loaded the bases with no outs against Bard reliever Jeff Goldrosen. A fielder's choice plated one run to make it 4-2, but Goldrosen closed the Thoroughbreds out with a strikeout and flyout to give the Raptors their fourth straight win.

Montecalvo went 2-for-2 with two doubles and three RBI.

In Game 2, Bard was up 1-0 when Skidmore put up six against Montecalvo in the top of the second, sending 11 batters to the plate.

Bard got one back in the fourth when JP Fisher walked, stole second, went to third on a wild pitch and scored on a double steal. Skidmore made it 8-2 with a pair in the top of the sixth, but Bard chipped away again with a run in the bottom of the sixth, when Adam Carafotes doubled and later scored on a fielder's choice.

It was still 8-3 in the bottom of the eighth. A sacrifice fly by Goldrosen scored Montecalvo to make it 8-4, and an unearned run made it 8-5 headed to the ninth.

After the Thoroughbreds were set down in order, Bard needed to rally. Pinch-hitter Dylan Long led off with a walk, and Fisher - who bunted three times in the twinbill before this at-bat - homered to right field, his first collegiate HR. That made it 8-7 and worked the Bard dugout into a frenzy.

With one out, Montecalvo beat out an infield single, but Bard's next batter struck out. With two outs, Goldrosen drove a triple to right-center to tie the game.

The Raptors had a runner in scoring position in the 10th and 11th, but couldn't score. And after Skidmore put up two in the top of the 12th, the Raptors had the tying run at the plate twice, but this time, the rally fizzled.

Fisher went 2-for-5 with a homer and two RBI; Carafotes smacked two doubles, and Montecalvo went 2-for-4.

Skidmore is 12-21 overall, 6-14 in the Liberty League. Bard is 9-25, 4-18.
