Late rally lifts NYU past Bard (with photo gallery)

ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. - New York University scored five runs over the last two innings, then defused a bottom of the ninth rally to defeat Bard College, 7-4, in a non-league game on Sunday afternoon.

NYU improved to 15-19; Bard is 5-22. See photo gallery

Both starters worked well into the late innings, and it was a 2-2 game heading into the top of the eighth. A walk and an infield single put runners on first and second for NYU with one out, and Jonathan Iaione (Bernardsville, NJ) singled to make it 3-2. That chased Bard starter JP Fisher, and the Violets added a run on a fielder's choice to make it 4-2.

With one out in the top of the ninth, NYU strung together three straight singles to load the bases. Adrian Spitz (Los Angeles, CA) hit a sacrifice fly to make it 5-2, and CJ Picerni followed with a two-run double to increase the lead to 7-2.

The Raptors scored twice in the bottom of the ninth on an RBI groundout by Fisher, and a double by Adam Carafotes, but the deficit was too big to overcome.

NYU starter Michael Vokulich (Encino, CA) went eight innings, yielding 12 hits and four runs. He walked one and struck out seven.

Over 7.1 innings, Fisher gave up eight hits and two earned runs, walking two and striking out six. He also went 2-for-5 with a triple. Alec Montecalvo went 4-for-4 with a double and triple, and David Schlosser went 3-for-5. Schlosser has a 12-game hitting streak and is now batting .427.

Bard has some time off before a four-game Liberty League series with Vassar next weekend. They'll play two at Vassar on Saturday, and two at Bard on Sunday. Follow all four games via Live Stats or Live Video right here.
