WINTER HAVEN, Fla. - The Bard College baseball team fell to 0-3 with a 7-5 loss to New England College on Sunday morning.
Five unearned runs gave the Pilgrims (3-6) a 5-2 lead through five innings, but the Raptors cut it to 5-3 when
Quinn McInerney followed an
Adam Carafotes double with an RBI single in the sixth.
It was 7-3 when Bard came to bat in the bottom of the ninth. Freshman
Matt Lasky singled, and freshman
Nick Kifyak plated him with a triple to left, making it 7-4. Freshman
Jeff Goldrosen followed with a pinch-hit single to drive in Kifyak, and it was 7-5 with a man on and no outs. But New England College closer Francesco DiRe (Barrington, RI) induced a double-play grounder and a groundout to end the game.
Carafotes went 2-for-4 with two RBI, and
Mark Leonhard added two hits for Bard.
The Raptors opened the season with a pair of losses to Lesley University, 9-7 and 12-4, on Saturday afternoon. In the first game, Carafotes went 3-for-4 with two RBI and helped give Bard a 2-0 lead in the top of the second, but the Lynx scored five in the second and three in the third to take an 8-2 lead.
It was 9-4 heading into the seventh, but with two outs, the Raptors rallied. An RBI single by Carafotes and a two-run hit by Goldrosen cut it to 9-7, but McInerney was gunned down going from second to third on Goldrosen's single to end the game.
In the second game, Lesley scored five in the second and led 9-0 through 3 1/2 innings. McInerney went 2-for-3 with a two-run single and Kifyak went 1-for-2 with an RBI.
Carafotes had quite a weekend, going 6-for-12 with a double and four RBI in Bard's first three games.
