Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Hartwick fights way past Bard in second half, 84-75

ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. - The Hartwick College men's basketball team is full of shooters, so if you're going to beat them, you've got to keep them from getting too many good looks at three-pointers.

It was clear early in Thursday night's non-league game that Bard was going to force Hartwick to try to beat them another way.

So that's what Hartwick did.

Held well below their shooting and scoring average from beyond the arc, Hartwick outrebounded Bard, 42-22, and went 19-for-22 from the foul line to come away with an 84-75 victory.

Bard (2-2) played tough man-to-man defense from the outset, making Hartwick's shooters obviously uncomfortable. On the other end, Hartwick employed a zone that made Bard uncomfortable, forcing the Raptors to shoot more three-pointers in this game than in any all year.

For a while there, it kind of backfired. Bard made 8-of-14 from out there in the first half. But Hartwick's rebounding advantage was 21-12 at halftime, and the Hawks led, 41-39, at the break.

As the second half started, one had to wonder if Bard could continue to hold the mad bombers at bay, while continuing to connect from three themselves.

Hartwick (4-3) scored the first seven points of the second half, and Bard was on its heels. But the Raptors put together an 11-4 run to tie it, 52-52, with 13:48 remaining. Two minutes later, Bard went ahead, 57-56, on a three-pointer from Caleb LaRosa.

The Hawks made another burst beginning at about the nine-minute mark. A three-pointer from Joey Lufkin (Argyle, NY), a Bard turnover, a layup from Lufkin, a missed jumper by Bard, and a layup by Brandon LaForest (Cohoes, NY) gave Hartwick a 68-60 lead. The lead was 10 with 5:56 left.

The dagger came with three minutes left. Bard had trimmed the lead to 74-69, and it was late in the shot clock for Hartwick. Senior Trevor Norton (Mullica Hill, NY) faked a three-pointer, drove toward the hoop, and made a diagonal pass to Lufkin, who nailed a wide open three-pointer. Bard didn't get closer than six the rest of the way.

Bard had limited Hartwick to 7-of-23 from beyond the arc - the Hawks average 12 made per game, and made 20 in a win over Cobleskill over the weekend - but it didn't matter. Norton, a 6-5 guard, finished with 28 points, eight rebounds, four assists and two steals. He went 12-for-12 from the foul line. Lufkin had 25 points, and LaForest had 13. Matt Wilson (Shelton, CT) added eight points and 15 rebounds.

Bard got 15 points apiece from DeVahnte Mosley and Tim Quashie, and 14 from Emmanuel Rainey. Mosley added four assists and four steals, and LaRosa chipped in with nine points and six rebounds.

Bard will not play another home game until Jan. 15. The Raptors will next play at Sarah Lawrence College in a non-league game on Tuesday night. Live Stats and Live Video are available. Tip it at 7.
