BAYAMON, Puerto Rico - A 16-2 run over the last seven-plus minutes of the first half broke the game open, and Bard never recovered in a 65-42 loss to Augsburg College in the Puerto Rico Classic on Saturday afternoon.
The Raptors (3-5) trailed 18-10 in the first half before scoring eight of the next 10 points to trail, 20-18. But the Auggies (5-3) scored the next 16 points and led by 15 at halftime.
Bard did not get closer than 15 in the second half.
Augsburg made the most of its size advantage, scoring 22 points in the paint. Senior forward Joe Zangel (Richfield, MN), who was averaging 12 points per game, was unstoppable underneath, leading the winners with 25 points on 10-of-13 shooting from the field. The Auggies continually dumped the ball into the post, where Zangel or Collin Olmscheid (Buffalo, MN) were waiting. Olmscheid finished with 12 points and six rebounds, as Augsburg outrebounded Bard, 38-29.
Augsburg shot 46 percent from the field in the first half and 42 percent for the game. Bard picked it up in the second half to finish at 36 percent.
DeVahnte Mosley was Bard only double-digit scorer with 13 points.
The Raptors will play one more game in Puerto Rico, facing Lawrence University at Coliseo Ruben Rodriguez at 3 p.m. Eastern time on Sunday. Live video is available; follow Bard's Twitter feed for scoring updates because the score is shown on the video infrequently.
