NEWBURGH, N.Y. - The notion of bend but don't break got a real test on Wednesday night. Eventually, Bard broke.
The Mount Saint Mary College women's soccer team swarmed Bard and peppered sophomore goalkeeper
Kelsey O'Brien with shots, but with 11 minutes left in regulation time, the game was still scoreless.
The Knights, who outshot Bard 11-2 in the first half and 14-1 in the second half, finally broke through in the 80th minute. Junior Melissa Maini (Massapequa Park, NY) took a through ball from Melissa Segreto (West Islip, NY) on the left side of the box and beat O'Brien to the far post.
Mount Saint Mary (3-2) had a decided edge in shots on goal (11-0) and corners (9-1), but O'Brien kept Bard in it with 10 saves. The Raptors fell to 3-3-1 with the loss.
Up next for Bard is another tough non-league game, this one against NYU on Saturday at 4. The Raptors beat NYU for the first time last fall. Follow that game via Live Stats right here.
