WAPPINGERS FALLS, N.Y. - The Bard College baseball team lost a pair of games to RPI in a Liberty League doubleheader on Saturday afternoon, 12-1 and 14-2.

The Engineers banged out 11 hits in the first game and 13 in the second game to improve to 20-10 overall, 8-7 in the Liberty League.

The first game of the doubleheader was tied 1-1 going into the top of the fifth, but RPI made it 3-1 when runners scored on wild pitches. In the sixth, however, RPI put up nine runs, including an incredible two home runs in the same inning by senior Shane Matthews (Ballston Spa, N.Y.)

Bard's only run came in the first, when JP Fisher reached on an error and later scored on a single by Jack Hawke. Sidearming righty Sean Conroy (Clifton Park, NY) threw a complete game five-hitter with 10 strikeouts and no walks to improve to 5-1. Matthews went 3-for-4 with three RBI, and TIm LeSuer (Oak View, CA) tripled and drove in three runs.

In the second game, RPI scored three in the first and eight in the third to jump out to a big lead. Bard scored single runs in the fifth - on a double-play grounder - and the sixth, when Dominic Stegall drove in Jack Hawke with a single. Carafotes finished with two hits.

Sophomore Greg Echeverria (Longmeadow, MA) tossed a complete game, holding Bard to two runs on six hits; he struck out 13 and didn't walk a batter. Senior Al Mersman (Newark, DE) doubled, homered and drove in four runs for the winners.

The teams will continue the four-game series on Sunday in Troy with another doubleheader. You can follow those games right here via Live Stats and/or Live Audio. First pitch is at 1.
