WAPPINGERS FALLS, N.Y. - If you'd heard that the Bard College baseball team had held Clarkson University to four runs on seven hits combined through an entire doubleheader, you'd probably also expect to hear that the Raptors had earned their first-ever Liberty League victory.

But Clarkson scratched out enough runs to beat Bard twice, 1-0 and 3-2, to sweep the four-game weekend series.

JP Fisher held Clarkson to two hits through six innings in the first game, but the Golden Knights scored in the bottom of the fourth on two walks and two wild pitches. The Raptors managed just five hits against Clarkson senior Jarrod Mattingtly (Philadelphia, PA), and although they had runners in scoring position in the first, second, third and fifth innings, but were never able to push a run across. The Golden Knights turned double plays to end the third and seventh innings.

Mark Leonhard had two hits and Fisher went 1-for-3 with two stolen bases for the Raptors.

The second game was just as close, with Clarkson scoring on a sacrifice fly in the seventh inning to break a 2-2 tie and go on to win, 3-2.

The Golden Knights had gone up 2-0 in the bottom of the first on a two-run single by Dom Pirro (Liverpool, NY), but Bard got two back in the top of the second. Alec Montecalvo doubled with one out, and after a walk to Tom Danz, Zach Ward doubled to cut the lead to 2-1. After a walk to Leonhard, Quinn McInerney made it 2-2 with an RBI groundout.

From there it was about the pitchers. Working in relief, Aaron DePetris held Clarkson to four hits and one run over seven innings. Clarkson freshman Eddie Miller (Lake Grove, NY) pitched a complete game five-hitter, holding Bard to two runs on five hits.

The Golden Knights loaded the bases on the bottom of the seventh on two singles and a hit batsman; David Wixted (Ballston Lake, NY) hit a sacrifice fly to plate the eventual winning run.

Ward had two hits and an RBI for the Raptors, who are 3-18-1 overall, 0-12-1 in the Liberty League. Clarkson is 12-10, 6-8.

Up next for Bard is a weekend home-and-home series with RPI. The Saturday doubleheader will be play at Dutchess Stadium beginning at 1 p.m.; the Sunday doubleheader will start at noon at RPI. Follow all four games in the series via Live Stats right here.
