FISHKILL, N.Y. - Bard drew the short straw and had to play its first-ever baseball games as a member of the Liberty League against 2013 regular season champion Union on Saturday.

It turned out to be a good news/bad news kind of thing.

In Game 1, the Raptors got no-hit by Union freshman Jake Fishman (Sharon, MA) and lost, 2-0. That was the bad news. The good news was the Bard freshman Zack Ward gave up just three hits and tossed Bard's first complete game of 2014.

In Game 2, the good news was that Bard got up 2-0 in the first and still led, 3-2, going into the seventh inning. The bad news was that Union scored an unearned run in the top of the seventh, and the umps called the game after the bottom of the seventh - so it was a 3-3 tie.

Fishman struck out seven, walked two and hit a batter to earn the seven-inning no-hitter. Kent Curran's (Eden Prairie, MN) two-run single in the third provided all the runs the Dutchmen would need.

Ward struck out two and walked six, working out of trouble on a couple of occasions.

In Game 2, Bard went up 2-0 in the bottom of the first. Quinn McInerney walked and Jack Hawke singled, and after a double steal, Adam Carafotes drove them both home with a two-out single to right field.

Bard starter Gabe Kleiman kept Union off the board until the fifth, when the Dutchmen tied it. Senior Joe Bradlee (Cambridge, MA) hit an RBI single and later scored on an error, so it was 2-2 going to the bottom of the fifth.

In the bottom of the fifth, Hawke singled and was sacrificed to second by Alec Montecalvo. Hawke went to third on a wild pitch and scored on another clutch single by Carafotes, this one to center.

It stayed 3-2 until the top of the seventh, when Union tied it with an unearned run. Carafotes reached on an error in the bottom of the seventh, but Bard didn't score and the game was called.

Kleiman gave up one earned run on three hits over 6.1 innings. He struck out seven, walked two, and hit three. Carafotes went 2-for-4 with all three RBI, while Hawke and Ward each had two hits.

Union is 5-3-1 overall and 1-0-1 in the Liberty League; Bard is 3-7-1 and 0-1-1.
